During his life, James Weldon Johnson was a teacher, lawyer, lyricist, poet, author, co-founder of ASCAP, deeply involved with the Harlem Renaissance, a university professor, a diplomat, and a tireless civil rights activist. Born in Jacksonville, Fl, in 1871, he died in a tragic accident in Wiscasset, ME, in 1938. In 2021, Johnson is best known for having written ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, but his accomplishments are many and his legacy is deep and inspiring. In June 2021, the Maine legislature passed a bill making June 17, the date of Johnson’s birth, an annual day of observance in Maine. Gather with the Wiscasset community and visitors from Portland, Jacksonville, and Washington, DC, to honor James Weldon Johnson and discuss how Wiscasset - and the state - will continue to honor the man and his legacy. Because of COVID precautions, an RSVP is required to: meadow_dibble@brown.edu with an October 20 deadline. The Day of Conversation is at the Wiscasset Community Center, 242 Gardiner Rd., Wiscasset, ME.
